Makiko works as a Project Liaison Manager in Global Clinical Development and is based in Tokyo, Japan.

Over 12 years ago, I joined LEO Pharma motivated by my curiosity and my passion for learning more about the pharmaceutical industry.

In my role, I serve as a vital link between different parts of our company, particularly between our Global HQ and LEO’s Japanese affiliate. Within this, I initiate and facilitate two-way communication and efficient collaboration between various stakeholders to maximize the value of LEO Pharma products in Japan – the third-largest dermatological market globally. Our shared goal is to successfully differentiate our assets.

At LEO Pharma, I take pride in the inclusive and supportive environment we have built. Women and men are equally encouraged and expected to bring their talent, perspectives and voices to the table. Our company has a zero-tolerance policy for double standards, discrimination or any form of structural inequality. Within my own department and in other global teams (Finance, HR and Legal, to name but a few), I collaborate with invariably exceptional female managers, who stand out for their expertise and strong dedication to their work.

One valuable lesson I have learned through my work at LEO Pharma is that stepping out of my comfort zone is crucial for both driving personal growth and fostering innovation overall. I make a conscious effort to avoid repeating “last year’s solutions” and automatically following precedence, because often the most effective solutions aren’t obvious or predictable. By actively seeking out diverse angles and approaches, we can truly accelerate the breakthrough moments which drive progress on all levels.
